The Complete Guide to Blobfest

Why Phoenixville has a Blob festival

In 1958, a low-budget sci-fi film called The Blob — Steve McQueen's first starring role — shot its most famous scene inside Phoenixville's Colonial Theatre: panicked moviegoers bursting out of the theatre doors to escape the man-eating goo. The Colonial, open since 1903 and rescued by a nonprofit in the late 1990s, leaned into its cult-movie fame, and in 2000 the first Blobfest was born. It has run every July since, taking over the theatre and downtown for a full weekend.

The Run-Out: the main event

The heart of Blobfest is the Run-Out — a live re-creation of that 1958 scene, with a few hundred costumed fans screaming their way out of the Colonial's doors while a crowd of thousands watches from Bridge Street. Only about 350 Run-Out tickets exist and they have sold out within minutes in recent years.

Ticket tip: follow the Colonial's Blobfest page and social accounts for the on-sale date, and be online the minute sales open. Watching from the street is free and almost as fun.
